An experienced nurse examines the wound — depth, contamination, movement, feeling and blood supply — and checks your tetanus history. A doctor reviews anything beyond nurse scope.
2Cleaned the right way
Thorough irrigation and antisepsis — the single biggest difference between a wound that heals quietly and one that gets infected.
3Closed and protected
Local stitches, skin glue or steri-strips under local anaesthetic where needed; bleeding controlled; the right dressing applied. Soft-tissue ultrasound or X-ray referral when we suspect a foreign body or fracture.
4A plan, not just a plaster
A dressing-change schedule, stitch-removal date (7–14 days), antibiotics where indicated (bites, contaminated wounds), a tetanus booster per UK guidance

Some operations leave tubes and drains in place for weeks. The skin around them needs regular professional cleaning to stay infection-free — a scheduled rhythm with our nurses, not a worry at home with cotton wool.

Do I need an appointment?
No — wound care is walk-in. Booking ahead just shortens your wait.
Does my cut need stitches?
If it gapes, won't stop oozing, or is on a joint or your face — probably. Walk in and the nurse will tell you honestly; if it only needs glue or strips, that's what you'll get.
A pet bit me but it looks tiny — should I bother?
Yes. Bites — especially on hands — push bacteria deep and infect easily. Early cleaning and assessment is exactly what prevents the nasty version.
Can you remove stitches from surgery done elsewhere?
Yes — NHS, private, abroad, cosmetic. Bring your discharge note if you have one and we'll take care of it (and check the healing while we're at it).
Do you do tetanus shots?
We check your tetanus status with every wound and arrange a booster per UK guidance when needed.
What about my child's wound?
Children are welcome — gentle technique, distraction, and parents in the room.
